Graphics & Imaging Technology
Description: This program introduces students to the communication field through the use of graphic arts as a media. Students will receive a working knowledge of the basic skills and techniques used in the graphic arts industry. Instruction will include layout and design, paste up, composition, proofreading, stripping, press operation, process camera, platemaking, desktop publishing, binding, copy machine operation and reproduction, graphic arts photography, job planning, and estimating. Students will build skills for exciting career opportunities such as: press operator, graphic designer, quick-copy technician, typesetter, and desktop publishing specialist.

GAR101

Orientation and Safety: This course provides instruction in policies and procedures of the institution, provides an overview of the graphic arts profession, and addresses job-seeking and retention skills. Plus, this course gives instruction in the safety regulations and practices for a print shop and various printing equipment.

GAR102

Electronic Imaging: This course provides instruction in basic principles of design, layout, text composition, proofreading, and page composition utilizing programs such as Quark Xpress, PhotoShop, Illustrator, and PageMaker.

GAR103

Reproduction Photography: This course provides instruction in the process of line photography by creating and developing negatives and halftones. This course also gives instruction in the basics of black and white photography.

GAR104

Image Assembly and Platemaking: This course provides instruction in the basic techniques of stripping negatives for use with platemaking. Included in the course are instructions on the creation and development of paper and metal plates for one, two and process color jobs. Plus, instruction on the basics of contact print making.

Basic Offset Press: This course provides instruction in the basic principles of offset, relief, flexographic, gravure, and screen printing. This course covers such operations and set-up, printing, cleaning, and close registration work.

GAR106

Bindery and Job Estimating: This course provides instruction in the basic bindery and finishing operations to include padding, paper cutting, shrink-wrapping, and folder set-up.

Advanced Press Operations: This course provides advanced instruction in the principles of offset press, estimating, and shop management.
