Respiratory Care
Description: This program is designed to prepare students for employment as a Respiratory Therapist. Respiratory Therapists work in a wide variety of clinical settings to evaluate, treat, and manage patients of all ages with respiratory illnesses and other cardiopulmonary disorders. This program is part of an advance standing agreement with Cameron University. Cameron University will offer general education, technical support, and related programs (33 credit hours) and Great Plains Technology Center will provide specialty programs in respiratory care (32 credit hours). Upon successful completion of both components the student will be awarded an Associate Degree in Respiratory Care by Cameron University. Successful degree candidates will be eligible to sit for the National Board for Respiratory Care exam to become a Certified Respiratory Therapist and a Registered Respiratory Therapist.  Turn learn more visit http://www.gptech.org/rsp.

RSP101

Respiratory Sciences: This course is designed to introduce the student to the concepts of atomic theory. The use of the periodic chart, chemical bonding, solutions, gas laws, and transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide are included in this course. It includes a study of acid-base balance analysis and interpretation, measuring electrodes and microbiology.

Cardio Pulmonary Anatomy and Physiology: In this course, students study anatomy and physiology of the heart and lung. The main focus will be on how the heart and lung each functionally relate to Respiratory Care. Study of coronary and pulmonary structure, circulation, cardiac cycle, gas exchange, and ventilation control will be included.

Introduction to Respiratory Care: This course is designed to familiarize the student with the history of Respiratory Care, medical and legal ethics, psychology of death and illness, medical terminology, medical records, interpersonal communication, safety, and basic math.

RSP104

Pharmacology: This course is designed to present the major pharmacological agents used for treating cardio/pulmonary diseases. Includes dosages, methods of action, and methods of delivery as well as patient assessment following drug administration.

RSP105

Respiratory Procedures I: This course is designed to cover the various therapeutic procedures used in Respiratory Care. Indications, side effects, hazards, and basis of application will be stressed. This includes aerosol and humidity therapy, oxygen therapy, chest physical therapy, hyperinflation therapy, pulmonary function testing, suctioning, and arterial blood gases. Rationale, equipment, and techniques will be stressed where applicable.

RSP106

Pathology: In this course, students will study treatment of respiratory diseases and disorders relating to the therapist's role in treatment and support. Topics include: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Asthma, Pneumothorax, Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), Oxygen Toxicity, Pneumonia and Pediatric Diseases.

RSP107

Respiratory Procedures II: This course consists of clinical application of therapeutic procedures in the critical care setting. Emphasis is placed on mechanical ventilation, artificial airway care, emergency/trauma care, EKG, IPPB, and resuscitation bags.

RSP108

Clinical I: The student will actually participate, under the direction of an assigned clinical instructor, in all therapeutic and diagnostic procedures as demonstrated and checked-off in Labs I and II. Refinement of skills in administration of procedures described under Respiratory Procedures I & II.

Clinical II: The student will actually participate, under the direction of an assigned clinical instructor, in all therapeutic and diagnostic procedures as demonstrated and checked-off in Labs I & II. Refinement of skills in administration of procedures described under Respiratory Procedures I & II.
