Administrative Assistant
Description: This course is designed to provide students who want to earn a living as an office employee with the occupational skills and knowledge essential to initial employment. Students will become skilled on the various business machines offices are currently using, such as computers, transcription machines, electronic calculators, fax machines, copiers, digital cameras, digital video cameras, etc. This course is open to high school juniors and seniors, as well as adults.

Computer Fundamentals: Students will learn how to operate and troubleshoot a microcomputer. Students will be responsible for learning how to use operating systems, especially Windows XP, and learn about the parts of a computer, as well as how it operates.

Word Processing: Using Word, the word processing application within the MS Office suite, students will be able to create letters, memos, reports, and other text-based documents. The student will be able to perfect and enhance documents, share it among workgroups, and use the Internet to support and communicate the documents created.

Database Management: Using Access, students will be able to operate a database management system that provides functions to store, search, filter, query, and report data in a database.

Spreadsheets: With Excel as the software used, students will analyze, chart, and manage data for personal, business and financial use. The students will also create and produce worksheets, charts, databases, and publish data to the Web.

Desktop Publishing: Using Publisher, students will become knowledgeable and able to create and modify publications used in today's fast-paced business world. The ability to communicate clearly and quickly is paramount to today's businesses.

Multimedia: In PowerPoint, students will create and save on-screen slide shows, slides for transparencies, 35-mm slides, and handouts. Students will enhance slides with graphics, charts, animation, sound and video to create exciting visuals that support and complement oral reports.

Electronic Calculator/Business Math: Using the electronic calculator, students will learn to use and operate the calculator to solve many of today's business applications, such as payroll, purchase orders, invoices, cash and trade discounts, as well as increase their speed and accuracy.

Basic Accounting: Accounting cycles for small businesses, sole proprietorships, partnerships, and merchandising businesses are taught as well as accounting knowledge and skills needed for careers in related business fields and advancing into preparation for studying college in accounting.

Office Procedures: This course is designed to help students develop skills that will be important to their career in a professional or business position. The content studied will help prepare students to enter the workforce now and to face the inevitable changes they will encounter in the future.

Records Management: High technology in the modern office has generated a variety of records - paperless records, such as computer disks, tapes, audio and video cassettes, and microforms. These paperless records require the same storage, protection, and retrieval skills as the paper records. Students will be able to adapt and utilize filing rules to correctly file and manage all sorts of records.

Business Communications: Success in a student's chosen career requires the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written form. Students will learn the skills needed to be an effective communicator in the world of work.

Telephone Techniques: By studying telephone techniques and telephone etiquette, students will acquire valuable lifelong skills in using proper telephone techniques and procedures. Students will develop telephone skills vital to their success in the business world whether answering the telephone as a receptionist or as an office professional.

Job Application/Interview: Students will become acquainted with various ways of learning about jobs and how to respond to these career opportunities. Students will learn how to find a job, apply for a job, and advance in their career after learning effective job search strategies.
