Health Careers Certification I
Description: Health Careers Exploration is a 9-month program (August through May) designed for high school seniors and adults. The program will give students the chance to follow future health-care trends by training in several areas or specializing in only one. Based upon the student's specific interest, opportunities will be made available for observation and assisting in a variety of health-related fields. Students will receive classroom, laboratory, and clinical training.

Prerequisite: Students must complete Oklahoma State Department of Health immunizations before starting clinical rotations. Proof of immunization required.

Student Leadership & Success: This course prepares students to succeed in the Health Career Academy and employment by emphasizing learning/interpersonal communication styles, employability skills, and leadership activities.

FH1102

Safety and Asepsis: This course prepares the student to apply safety principles including body mechanics, universal precautions, hazardous materials communication, and aseptic technique in the medical environment.

FH1103

Human Anatomy and Physiology: This course provides an introduction to the major body systems and components. Students will be able to identify body system components and discuss the functions of each system.

Medical and Legal Ethics: This course prepares students to function in the workplace in accordance with the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Patient Bill of Rights, and other legal and ethical requirements.

Medical Math: This course prepares students to apply basic math principles to medical situations, analyze graphs and charts appropriately, and use formulas and conversions to solve medically related problems.

Assessment Techniques: This course prepares the student to understand, measure, and record patient vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, respirations, height/weight, and glucose levels. Students will also be able to discuss Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and recognize and report patient levels of consciousness and coherence.

Mobility: This course prepares students to operate transport equipment including wheelchairs, assist patients with ambulation, and provide transfer assistance to patients and/or residents.

CPR for Health Care Providers: Students will attain certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation appropriate for employment in a health care facility.

Basic Health Care/Grooming: This course prepares students to provide personal care skills to patients and residents in both long term care and hospital facilities. Students will be able to assist with bathing, hair care, oral hygiene, feeding, elimination, and general grooming. Students will also have the skills to perform range of motion exercises and back massages.

Computer Applications: This course prepares students to create, save, retrieve, edit, and print word processing documents, including using special functions such as spell check and text enhancements. Students will also be able to use the Internet for research and successfully prepare a resume and related correspondence.

Health Care Systems: This course allows students to gain knowledge in the range of services available to clients, how health care reimbursement affects delivery of services, participate in waste reduction and quality improvement programs and access facility training, manuals, and related resources in order to be successful in employment.

Phlebotomy: Students will learn and practice basic phlebotomy techniques and prepare and handle specimens for lab analysis. Students will also learn proper disposal of sharps and contaminated items according to the universal precaution guidelines.

Observation and Documentation: This course prepares students to observe patients and properly record observations in medical charts. Students will be trained in proper use of medical terminology, grammar and spelling as it applies to the health care profession.

Advanced Health Care Specialties: This course will familiarize students with the careers available in the health care profession and procedures for identifying and obtaining education, licensure, and employment in those fields. Independent research projects may be included on specialized topics.

Mentoring and Supervision Techniques: This course will prepare students to serve as mentors, supervisors, and evaluators in the health care profession. Students will be able to train and supervise others using ethical principles and techniques that promote team building in the profession.

Clinical Orientation: This course will prepare the students to enter clinical rotations and perform within a designated scope of practice and with professionalism.

Lab Skills Checkoffs: This course will prepare students to gather vital sign information including blood pressure, height/weight, respirations, pulse, and temperature and record them accurately. Students will complete both theory and practical exercises to demonstrate skill mastery.

Clinical Experience: This course will allow students to perform employment-related skills in a variety of health care settings under the supervision of the instructor(s) and clinical site staff. Clinical sites will be selected based on student interest and capacity of the facility to accommodate students.
