Description:
Health Careers is a nine-month program (August through May) designed for high school seniors and adults. The program will give students the chance to follow future health-care trends by training in several areas or specializing in only one. Based upon the student's specific interest, opportunities will be made available for observation and assisting in a variety of health-related fields. Students will receive classroom, laboratory, and clinical training.

| FH2101 | Introduction to Therapeutic Careers: This course is designed to introduce students to health care systems, medical and legal ethics, medical terminology and medical math. Health care system topics include range of services offered, reimbursement effects on care delivery, reducing waste and duplication, quality improvement, and utilization of facility resources. Medical and legal ethic topics include Health Insurance and Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), health care record management, Patient Bill of Rights, healthcare professional ethics, and legal terms and examples. Medical terminology topics include abbreviations, definitions, word parts, and pronunciation. Medical math topics include basic math to solve health-related math problems, metric conversion, and interpreting diagrams, charts, graphs, and tables. | |
| FH2102 | Introduction to Patient Care: This course is designed to introduce students to patient care. Topics include Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider certification through the American heart Association, safety and asepsis in the workplace, and basic health care and grooming skills and concepts. | |
| FH2103 | Human Anatomy and Physiology: This course is designed to provide instruction on structure and function of body systems to include integumentary, skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestion, urinary, central and peripheral nervous, special senses, immune, endocrine, and reproductive systems. The course design also includes activities to utilize research skills through written and oral reports. | |
| FH2104 | Computer Applications: This course is designed to introduce the student to the use of computers and complete a resume and related documents. Topics include Windows-based software, word processing, specialized work processing tools, Internet searches, and completion of resume, reference list, and cover letter. | |
| FH2105 | Student Leadership & Success: This course is designed to instruct the student in areas of learning styles, student support systems, and personal employability skills. Membership and involvement in Health Occupations Students' of America will be encouraged. Student portfolios will be developed in this course. | |
| FH2106 | Physical Therapy Aide: This course is designed to prepare the student for entry-level employment as a physical/occupational therapy aide. Instruction includes introduction and roles of the rehabilitation team, maintenance of equipment, safety in the physical-occupational therapy workplace, treatment regimes, and treatment application. Course design includes clinical component to provide real world experience in the field. | |
| FH2107 | Dental Aide: This course is designed to prepare the student for entry-level employment as a dental aide-assistant for further on-the-job training. Instruction includes an overview of the dental team, anatomy of oral cavity, dental office procedures and communication, sterilization of equipment, x-ray development, instrument identification, and general concepts of dental procedures. The course design includes clinical components to provide real world experience in the field. | |

Instruction includes medical terminology, medical math, drug classifications, pharmacy procedures and communications, and inventory management and stocking. | FH2111 | Pre-Nursing Assessment and Mobility Techniques: This covers covers subjective and objective patient information, obtaining document and report patient data, identify levels of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, recognize patient level of consciousness and coherence, operate transport equipment, assist clients/patients with ambulation using assistive devices and equipment safely, and provide transfer assistance to patients/clients. | |
